Hawking does 'Big Bang' song at Comic-Con

TV

Move over, Sheldon Cooper! There's a real theoretical physicist in the room! Stephen Hawking made a surprise appearance at Friday's "Big Bang Theory" panel at San Diego Comic-Con, kicking off the event with a pre-recorded video segment taped in his office.

The world-renowned physicist idolized by Jim Parsons' Sheldon apologized to fans for not being there in person. "Sorry I couldn't be there. I got a flat tire," he said. "That was a joke. Ha ha!"

The brilliant man, who has made a guest appearance on the sitcom, also shared a little bit about what he likes to do in his free time.

"When I'm not playing Words With Friends with Sheldon, I like to think about the universe," he revealed. And then it got really good: Hawking decided to explain the Big Bang theory in 17 words by "singing" "The Big Bang Theory's" theme song.

Hawking's appearance lent some star power to the room, as most of the cast wasn't at the event. CBS instead focused the session on the show's writers room. The panelists (including writer-producers Steve Molaro, Bill Prady, Eric Kaplan, Jim Reynolds, Steve Holland and Maria Ferrari, plus scientific consultant David Saltzberg) had barely taken their seats when Melissa Rauch, who plays microbiologist Bernadette, took the podium as moderator.

The scribes then shared some fun tidbits: a writer's own terrible wedding night was the real-life basis of Bernadette and Howard's failure to consummate their marriage, as was Amy's exaggerated illness to get some action with Sheldon.

The biggest surprise, however, came when Rauch took questions from the audience. "Reveal yourself!" she demanded of an unintelligible fan outfitted head to toe in a bounty-hunter costume from "Return of the Jedi."

Boushh the bounty hunter complied ? and thousands of fans gasped to see the face of star Johnny Galecki.

"Who are you?" she asked, to which he replied with an iconic line: "Someone who loves you."

Other highlights after Galecki took a seat at the panel:

  • When season seven premieres, "we will see Leonard on the ship" conducting research with Stephen Hawking.
  • Bernadette and Amy will take their first trip sans Penny.
  • "Coitus" between Amy and Sheldon is "a possibility," with the writers acknowledging that "Amy will continue trying to get her way." But Reynolds noted that "some of the charm is their glacial pace." Even better, from his perspective, "It makes the show last longer!"
  • "It always baffles me how much Amy has gotten Sheldon to move," added Prady. "With Sheldon you have a character who comes from a place of, 'No, I'm not going to change.' It's a lot of interesting work in the writers room (proposing) 'What if Amy did this?'"
  • When an attorney took the mic to point out a legal error, the EPs countered: "You have just blown the series finale. It's a little like 'Breaking Bad': We've planted some seeds and that's one of them."
  • Galecki praised the panelists for "writing Penny as a talented actress." And pointed out that her career trajectory "is moving at the speed of the career of my friends who are actors."

"The Big Bang Theory" returns for season seven on Sept. 26.

If one thing is for certain, it?s that there will never be a shortage of educational apps on the App Store. However, most of these apps help children learn the alphabet or practice math skills. If you?re looking for an app that helps them learn about animals and nature, this is the one for you.

Joyful Animals for Kids HD, developed by Roman Nazarkevych, is a new and fun app for youngsters and is perfect for parents who would like an app that teaches their child about wildlife.

Joyful Animals for Kids HD is a pleasant deviation from the usual educational app. While many focus on math or the alphabet, this is the first I?ve seen where kids are quizzed on critters instead of crunching numbers. What a pleasant relief it is, too! Joyful Animals for Kids HD requires children to identify different parts of animals and where they live in the wild and includes a slew of gorgeous animations that make the app a stunning visual treat.

To start, children can choose which kinds of animals they want to identify. The first category, At Lawn, is immediately available. However, the other two Joyful Animals for Kids HD categories (In Africa and On the Farm) must be unlocked individually via in-app purchase. Each category includes seven creatures to play with. While this might be sufficient for younger children, I found it extremely easy to complete all of the available creature puzzles fairly quickly.

To complete a creature puzzle, children must pick an animal part from the menu on the right side of the screen and drag it to the appropriate place on the animal or insect. This might be frustrating at first, though, because the recognition window isn?t very big. This means children have to align pieces almost perfectly in order for the puzzle to recognize it. Once all of the parts are placed, a multiple-choice question asks where the animals habitat is located.

One of my favorite things about Joyful Animals for Kids HD is the fact that it really makes children think. For example, it?s not as easy as quickly dragging and dropping parts in their place. Only one of the three randomly generated parts is correct, so children have to choose wisely. Plus the mini quiz regarding habitat is something most young children probably don?t realize they already know.

One thing I do want to mention, though, is the fact that I think Joyful Animals for Kids HD needs some sort of brief tutorial for first-time users. Also, it would be great to be able to interact with animals once a category is completed. Currently there isn?t a way for kids to go back and redo a puzzle, meaning they?re pretty much stuck unless you unlock another category or reset the game.

Global markets rise on Bernanke stimulus promise

BEIJING (AP) ? Global stocks rose Thursday after Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke promised to continue to stimulate the U.S. economy.

Oil rose above $107 a barrel, near the highest level in more than a year, on hopes of stronger U.S. demand.

The Shanghai Composite Index jumped 3.2 percent to 2,072.99, its biggest gain in nearly seven months, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 2.6 percent to 21.437.49. Tokyo's Nikkei 225 added 0.4 percent to 14,472.58.

In Europe, Germany's Dax rose 1.1 percent to 8,155.18 and France's CAC-40 gained 0.9 percent to 3,876.64.

Markets rebounded from caution a day earlier over unexpectedly weak Chinese trade figures that suggested the world's second-largest economy is slowing even more abruptly than forecast.

"In one short and sweet statement, Federal Reserve chairman Bernanke has flicked a switch on the markets," said strategist Evan Lucas of Australia's IG Markets in a report.

Bernanke said Wednesday the U.S. needs "highly accommodative monetary policy" ? or low interest rates ? "for the foreseeable future."

That reassured investors who were dismayed by Bernanke's comments last month that the Fed would likely slow its bond purchases later this year and end them around mid-2014 if the economy strengthens. Some critics said the Fed bungled its communications strategy.

The Fed has been buying $85 billion of financial assets a month to keep interest rates low and encourage borrowing and spending. That stimulus has driven global stocks higher, so the prospect of reducing it caused market volatility in recent weeks.

Elsewhere in Asia, Taiwan's Taiex gained 1.8 percent to 8,154.05 and Sydney's S&P/ASX 200 rose 0.8 percent to 4,940.20. Markets in Singapore, Manila and Jakarta also rose.

In China, gains were led by shares in finance, cement producers, coal miners, real estate, non-ferrous metals and paper-processing companies.

Ping An Bank Ltd. rose by the daily permitted maximum of 10 percent. Shanghai Pudong Development Bank Co. Ltd gained 9.2 percent and Citic Securities, China's biggest brokerage by asset value, gained 7.9 percent.

On Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial average future rose 0.9 percent in electronic trading on the Chicago Mercantile Exchanges. The future for the Standard & Poor's 500 rose 1 percent.

In currency markets, the dollar fell to 98.39 yen from late Wednesday's 98.83 yen. The euro was little changed at $1.3143 from $1.3140.

Crude rose 50 cents to $1076.03 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract gained $2.99 to $106.52 on Wednesday after a report indicated U.S. stockpiles fell by far more than expected last week, in a potential sign of growing demand.

What is the waiting period for buying a house after ... - Zillow Real ...

Two years is a standard figure, but this can vary widely depending on personal situation, down payments, and the type of loan you pursue. Generally, the higher a down payment you're able to put down on home will cut down on how long you'd have to wait.

Cubs, city of Chicago agree on Wrigley Jumbotron

CHICAGO (AP) ? The Chicago Cubs, which waited decades to install lights at Wrigley Field and has waited more than a century to win a World Series, took a giant step toward ending the wait for something every other team in the majors already has: a Jumbotron.

The city's landmarks commission, which must sign off on such plans because Wrigley is a city landmark, approved a plan Thursday to allow the team to build a first-ever electronic Jumbotron and other sign above the ivy-covered outfield walls. It did so despite objections from the local alderman, who said the signs would harm the quality of life in the neighborhood, and rooftop owners, who complained the signs will cut into their views and devastate their businesses.

The full City Council still must give its approval. Traditionally in such zoning and development issues, the other aldermen vote the way the local alderman wants. But the tradition of doing what the mayor wants is even stronger, and Mayor Rahm Emanuel clearly wants this deal to go through.

In addition, the decision might have moved the Cubs and the city a step closer to a courtroom. The rooftop owners stopped short of threatening a lawsuit, as they have done in the past, but during the hearing they talked about the tens of millions of dollars they invested in their businesses after signing their own revenue-sharing deal with the Cubs.

"They call it a see-through sign," rooftop owner Mark Schlenker said of the planned sign in right field. "I call it bankruptcy."

For his part, Ald. Tom Tunney focused on what the Jumbotron in left field would do to the neighborhood and asked the commission to imagine what a Jumbotron that is far bigger than the iconic scoreboard in center field would mean to residents right across the street.

The deal would allow the Cubs to erect a 5,700-square-foot Jumbotron in left field of the 99-year-old ball park and a 650-square-foot sign in right field.

"The Cubs often point to large signs at Fenway and U.S. Cellular. Those signs back up to expressways, not people's homes," he said.

And he said the effects of the signs would be felt father away.

"From blocks and blocks away, the light from the proposed ... Jumbotron will flicker in living rooms and bedrooms throughout the ward," he said. He asked that the size of the Jumbotron be reduced.

The signs have long been the most contentious piece of a $500 million renovation puzzle the Cubs have been trying to put together since the Ricketts family bought the team in 2009.

The Cubs have said that they need the advertising revenue the signs will generate to help fund the renovation project that the team is paying for without public money. Team Chairman Tom Ricketts even suggested in May that he would move the team out of the iconic ball park if he couldn't build the kind of signs the team wants.

Throughout the hearing, the talk was about what the Cubs mean to the city, the fans and residents of what is commonly known as Wrigleyville. Even the commissioners expressed concern that the Cubs were risking changing the ballpark so much that fans would turn away.

"You know you don't appreciate what you have until it's gone sometimes," Commissioner Mary Ann Smith said.

But Michael Lufrano, the Cubs' executive vice president for community affairs, said the team's owners have the biggest incentive of all to make sure fans continue to visit the park.

"We don't want to change it so people won't come," he said.

Thursday's hearing underlines the fact that Wrigley, famous for the storied billy goat curse and Babe Ruth's called home run shot, is unlike any stadium in the United States.

In fact all the emotion about Wrigley was on display during the hearing that lasted nearly six hours. Supporters of the new signs echoed what Cubs officials have said: That the advertising revenues generated by the signs will help the team win and keep them from abandoning Wrigley Field.

"If the Cubs moved out of the city, it will devastate Wrigleyville," said Cecil Bernard, a neighborhood resident.

But others scoffed at the notion the signs would help turn the Cubs into winners, noting similar talk surfaced before the Cubs erected lights at Wrigley in 1988. They also told the commissioners the changes threatened a singular live sports experience shared by generations of fans.

If the City Council approves the signs, the beginning of the major renovation project could begin as early as later this year. And if the signs do go up, everyone will be watching what they do to the views from the rooftops, where owner charge people to watch the games from bleachers built atop the buildings. The team is in the middle of a 20-year revenue-sharing agreement that calls for the rooftop owners to hand over to the Cubs 17 percent of their gross annual revenue.

Cutting into their views, say the owners, amounts to a violation of their contracts with the team.

The Cubs have said the signs would have a minimal impact on the rooftops and that the views would be "largely preserved." They have pointed out that the massive left-field Jumbotron is in front of one of the few buildings that does not have rooftop bleachers.

At the same time, they've made it clear that minimal impact does not mean no impact, and if what they do to improve their business hurts the businesses that peek over their walls, so be it.
