Hawking does 'Big Bang' song at Comic-Con

TV

Move over, Sheldon Cooper! There's a real theoretical physicist in the room! Stephen Hawking made a surprise appearance at Friday's "Big Bang Theory" panel at San Diego Comic-Con, kicking off the event with a pre-recorded video segment taped in his office.

The world-renowned physicist idolized by Jim Parsons' Sheldon apologized to fans for not being there in person. "Sorry I couldn't be there. I got a flat tire," he said. "That was a joke. Ha ha!"

The brilliant man, who has made a guest appearance on the sitcom, also shared a little bit about what he likes to do in his free time.

"When I'm not playing Words With Friends with Sheldon, I like to think about the universe," he revealed. And then it got really good: Hawking decided to explain the Big Bang theory in 17 words by "singing" "The Big Bang Theory's" theme song.

Hawking's appearance lent some star power to the room, as most of the cast wasn't at the event. CBS instead focused the session on the show's writers room. The panelists (including writer-producers Steve Molaro, Bill Prady, Eric Kaplan, Jim Reynolds, Steve Holland and Maria Ferrari, plus scientific consultant David Saltzberg) had barely taken their seats when Melissa Rauch, who plays microbiologist Bernadette, took the podium as moderator.

The scribes then shared some fun tidbits: a writer's own terrible wedding night was the real-life basis of Bernadette and Howard's failure to consummate their marriage, as was Amy's exaggerated illness to get some action with Sheldon.

The biggest surprise, however, came when Rauch took questions from the audience. "Reveal yourself!" she demanded of an unintelligible fan outfitted head to toe in a bounty-hunter costume from "Return of the Jedi."

Boushh the bounty hunter complied ? and thousands of fans gasped to see the face of star Johnny Galecki.

"Who are you?" she asked, to which he replied with an iconic line: "Someone who loves you."

Other highlights after Galecki took a seat at the panel:

  • When season seven premieres, "we will see Leonard on the ship" conducting research with Stephen Hawking.
  • Bernadette and Amy will take their first trip sans Penny.
  • "Coitus" between Amy and Sheldon is "a possibility," with the writers acknowledging that "Amy will continue trying to get her way." But Reynolds noted that "some of the charm is their glacial pace." Even better, from his perspective, "It makes the show last longer!"
  • "It always baffles me how much Amy has gotten Sheldon to move," added Prady. "With Sheldon you have a character who comes from a place of, 'No, I'm not going to change.' It's a lot of interesting work in the writers room (proposing) 'What if Amy did this?'"
  • When an attorney took the mic to point out a legal error, the EPs countered: "You have just blown the series finale. It's a little like 'Breaking Bad': We've planted some seeds and that's one of them."
  • Galecki praised the panelists for "writing Penny as a talented actress." And pointed out that her career trajectory "is moving at the speed of the career of my friends who are actors."

"The Big Bang Theory" returns for season seven on Sept. 26.

If one thing is for certain, it?s that there will never be a shortage of educational apps on the App Store. However, most of these apps help children learn the alphabet or practice math skills. If you?re looking for an app that helps them learn about animals and nature, this is the one for you.

Joyful Animals for Kids HD, developed by Roman Nazarkevych, is a new and fun app for youngsters and is perfect for parents who would like an app that teaches their child about wildlife.

Joyful Animals for Kids HD is a pleasant deviation from the usual educational app. While many focus on math or the alphabet, this is the first I?ve seen where kids are quizzed on critters instead of crunching numbers. What a pleasant relief it is, too! Joyful Animals for Kids HD requires children to identify different parts of animals and where they live in the wild and includes a slew of gorgeous animations that make the app a stunning visual treat.

To start, children can choose which kinds of animals they want to identify. The first category, At Lawn, is immediately available. However, the other two Joyful Animals for Kids HD categories (In Africa and On the Farm) must be unlocked individually via in-app purchase. Each category includes seven creatures to play with. While this might be sufficient for younger children, I found it extremely easy to complete all of the available creature puzzles fairly quickly.

To complete a creature puzzle, children must pick an animal part from the menu on the right side of the screen and drag it to the appropriate place on the animal or insect. This might be frustrating at first, though, because the recognition window isn?t very big. This means children have to align pieces almost perfectly in order for the puzzle to recognize it. Once all of the parts are placed, a multiple-choice question asks where the animals habitat is located.

One of my favorite things about Joyful Animals for Kids HD is the fact that it really makes children think. For example, it?s not as easy as quickly dragging and dropping parts in their place. Only one of the three randomly generated parts is correct, so children have to choose wisely. Plus the mini quiz regarding habitat is something most young children probably don?t realize they already know.

One thing I do want to mention, though, is the fact that I think Joyful Animals for Kids HD needs some sort of brief tutorial for first-time users. Also, it would be great to be able to interact with animals once a category is completed. Currently there isn?t a way for kids to go back and redo a puzzle, meaning they?re pretty much stuck unless you unlock another category or reset the game.

Global markets rise on Bernanke stimulus promise

BEIJING (AP) ? Global stocks rose Thursday after Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke promised to continue to stimulate the U.S. economy.

Oil rose above $107 a barrel, near the highest level in more than a year, on hopes of stronger U.S. demand.

The Shanghai Composite Index jumped 3.2 percent to 2,072.99, its biggest gain in nearly seven months, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 2.6 percent to 21.437.49. Tokyo's Nikkei 225 added 0.4 percent to 14,472.58.

In Europe, Germany's Dax rose 1.1 percent to 8,155.18 and France's CAC-40 gained 0.9 percent to 3,876.64.

Markets rebounded from caution a day earlier over unexpectedly weak Chinese trade figures that suggested the world's second-largest economy is slowing even more abruptly than forecast.

"In one short and sweet statement, Federal Reserve chairman Bernanke has flicked a switch on the markets," said strategist Evan Lucas of Australia's IG Markets in a report.

Bernanke said Wednesday the U.S. needs "highly accommodative monetary policy" ? or low interest rates ? "for the foreseeable future."

That reassured investors who were dismayed by Bernanke's comments last month that the Fed would likely slow its bond purchases later this year and end them around mid-2014 if the economy strengthens. Some critics said the Fed bungled its communications strategy.

The Fed has been buying $85 billion of financial assets a month to keep interest rates low and encourage borrowing and spending. That stimulus has driven global stocks higher, so the prospect of reducing it caused market volatility in recent weeks.

Elsewhere in Asia, Taiwan's Taiex gained 1.8 percent to 8,154.05 and Sydney's S&P/ASX 200 rose 0.8 percent to 4,940.20. Markets in Singapore, Manila and Jakarta also rose.

In China, gains were led by shares in finance, cement producers, coal miners, real estate, non-ferrous metals and paper-processing companies.

Ping An Bank Ltd. rose by the daily permitted maximum of 10 percent. Shanghai Pudong Development Bank Co. Ltd gained 9.2 percent and Citic Securities, China's biggest brokerage by asset value, gained 7.9 percent.

On Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial average future rose 0.9 percent in electronic trading on the Chicago Mercantile Exchanges. The future for the Standard & Poor's 500 rose 1 percent.

In currency markets, the dollar fell to 98.39 yen from late Wednesday's 98.83 yen. The euro was little changed at $1.3143 from $1.3140.

Crude rose 50 cents to $1076.03 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract gained $2.99 to $106.52 on Wednesday after a report indicated U.S. stockpiles fell by far more than expected last week, in a potential sign of growing demand.

Two years is a standard figure, but this can vary widely depending on personal situation, down payments, and the type of loan you pursue. Generally, the higher a down payment you're able to put down on home will cut down on how long you'd have to wait.

Cubs, city of Chicago agree on Wrigley Jumbotron

CHICAGO (AP) ? The Chicago Cubs, which waited decades to install lights at Wrigley Field and has waited more than a century to win a World Series, took a giant step toward ending the wait for something every other team in the majors already has: a Jumbotron.

The city's landmarks commission, which must sign off on such plans because Wrigley is a city landmark, approved a plan Thursday to allow the team to build a first-ever electronic Jumbotron and other sign above the ivy-covered outfield walls. It did so despite objections from the local alderman, who said the signs would harm the quality of life in the neighborhood, and rooftop owners, who complained the signs will cut into their views and devastate their businesses.

The full City Council still must give its approval. Traditionally in such zoning and development issues, the other aldermen vote the way the local alderman wants. But the tradition of doing what the mayor wants is even stronger, and Mayor Rahm Emanuel clearly wants this deal to go through.

In addition, the decision might have moved the Cubs and the city a step closer to a courtroom. The rooftop owners stopped short of threatening a lawsuit, as they have done in the past, but during the hearing they talked about the tens of millions of dollars they invested in their businesses after signing their own revenue-sharing deal with the Cubs.

"They call it a see-through sign," rooftop owner Mark Schlenker said of the planned sign in right field. "I call it bankruptcy."

For his part, Ald. Tom Tunney focused on what the Jumbotron in left field would do to the neighborhood and asked the commission to imagine what a Jumbotron that is far bigger than the iconic scoreboard in center field would mean to residents right across the street.

The deal would allow the Cubs to erect a 5,700-square-foot Jumbotron in left field of the 99-year-old ball park and a 650-square-foot sign in right field.

"The Cubs often point to large signs at Fenway and U.S. Cellular. Those signs back up to expressways, not people's homes," he said.

And he said the effects of the signs would be felt father away.

"From blocks and blocks away, the light from the proposed ... Jumbotron will flicker in living rooms and bedrooms throughout the ward," he said. He asked that the size of the Jumbotron be reduced.

The signs have long been the most contentious piece of a $500 million renovation puzzle the Cubs have been trying to put together since the Ricketts family bought the team in 2009.

The Cubs have said that they need the advertising revenue the signs will generate to help fund the renovation project that the team is paying for without public money. Team Chairman Tom Ricketts even suggested in May that he would move the team out of the iconic ball park if he couldn't build the kind of signs the team wants.

Throughout the hearing, the talk was about what the Cubs mean to the city, the fans and residents of what is commonly known as Wrigleyville. Even the commissioners expressed concern that the Cubs were risking changing the ballpark so much that fans would turn away.

"You know you don't appreciate what you have until it's gone sometimes," Commissioner Mary Ann Smith said.

But Michael Lufrano, the Cubs' executive vice president for community affairs, said the team's owners have the biggest incentive of all to make sure fans continue to visit the park.

"We don't want to change it so people won't come," he said.

Thursday's hearing underlines the fact that Wrigley, famous for the storied billy goat curse and Babe Ruth's called home run shot, is unlike any stadium in the United States.

In fact all the emotion about Wrigley was on display during the hearing that lasted nearly six hours. Supporters of the new signs echoed what Cubs officials have said: That the advertising revenues generated by the signs will help the team win and keep them from abandoning Wrigley Field.

"If the Cubs moved out of the city, it will devastate Wrigleyville," said Cecil Bernard, a neighborhood resident.

But others scoffed at the notion the signs would help turn the Cubs into winners, noting similar talk surfaced before the Cubs erected lights at Wrigley in 1988. They also told the commissioners the changes threatened a singular live sports experience shared by generations of fans.

If the City Council approves the signs, the beginning of the major renovation project could begin as early as later this year. And if the signs do go up, everyone will be watching what they do to the views from the rooftops, where owner charge people to watch the games from bleachers built atop the buildings. The team is in the middle of a 20-year revenue-sharing agreement that calls for the rooftop owners to hand over to the Cubs 17 percent of their gross annual revenue.

Cutting into their views, say the owners, amounts to a violation of their contracts with the team.

The Cubs have said the signs would have a minimal impact on the rooftops and that the views would be "largely preserved." They have pointed out that the massive left-field Jumbotron is in front of one of the few buildings that does not have rooftop bleachers.

At the same time, they've made it clear that minimal impact does not mean no impact, and if what they do to improve their business hurts the businesses that peek over their walls, so be it.

Immigration reform: House GOP consensus is to do something ? but later

House Republicans emerged from a strategy session on immigration reform saying something needed to be done but seeming content to shelve the issue until the fall. What to do is still an issue.

By David Grant,?Staff Writer / July 10, 2013

House Republicans emerging Wednesday from a two-hour, closed-door, conference-wide strategy session on Capitol Hill?s most pressing subject, immigration reform, said there was agreement that they would continue to work on the issue, but not nearly at the pace sought by the White House or the Senate.

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; // google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

Seeming content to shelve the issue until the fall session, the Republican lawmakers said the solution they eventually would craft would come in smaller legislative chunks and carry deeper conservative influence than the Senate?s comprehensive bill that passed with bipartisan support at the end of June.

The lawmakers also stressed that beefed up border security and interior immigration enforcement measures would have to come before any legalization for any group among the nation?s 11 million undocumented immigrants.

But the Republicans, who heard presentations from Speaker John Boehner (R) of Ohio and Rep. Paul Ryan (R) of Wisconsin, stressed nevertheless that there was broad agreement that something should be done.

?There was a consensus that people want to do something about this issue, that this issue has been on the table for too long,? says Rep. Lou Barletta (R) of Pennsylvania, an immigration hardliner. ?There?s an overwhelming agreement that we do border security first and then do everything else.?

But whatever package the Republicans craft, it just won?t come as fast as the White House or Senate immigration reformers want.

It?s ?100 percent unlikely? that the House will move immigration legislation before the August recess, says Rep. John Fleming (R) of Louisiana.

?We want to keep forward motion, but we don?t feel like we have to pass something in the next few weeks,? Representative Fleming says. ?We?re going to go back home and talk to our constituents in August.?

Republicans are facing a tortuous path to actually passing immigration legislation, however.

On the one hand, they don?t want to allow inaction to give any leverage to President Obama and the majority Democrat Senate.

?If we don?t pass anything, that?s just going to let the Senate dominate, and that?s just not a good policy,? says Doug Lamborn (R) of Colorado.

But on the other, Republicans need time to figure out what, exactly, they support.

The House Judiciary and Homeland Security Committees have passed a series of pieces of the immigration reform puzzle and roughly half the conference, according to House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte, have come to education sessions on immigration.

But beyond vague requirements of more and faster border security than the Senate bill envisions, Republicans were clear that there was little attempt to find a consensus on policy Wednesday. After the presentations by Speaker Boehner and Congressman Ryan, several dozen lawmakers rose to address their colleagues for all of 90 seconds each.

Left unanswered in the half-dozen bills Republicans have passed so far is whether the nation?s undocumented population will be allowed some way to adjust their legal status. A so-called pathway to citizenship for those in the US illegally is an absolute must-have for Democrats and Mr. Obama. ?

?If the House group has a pathway to citizenship even if it?s different than ours, it may be more stringent, we can look at that,? says Sen. Chuck Schumer (D) of New York, ?but without a path to citizenship, I don?t see how you get anywhere, in the House or in Congress.?

Republicans may still get to some form of legalization, says Rep. Raul Labrador (R) of Idaho, but there?s no consensus on the matter as of yet. ?That?s something that will be hard to get to, but I can see us getting there,? he says.

University of Louisville to open pediatric, dental offices

Ron Bath | Business First

U of L is opening two clinics at the Sam Swope Kosair Charities Centre, 982 Eastern Parkway.

The University of Louisville has signed an agreement to lease space from Kosair Charities to open two medical offices on Eastern Parkway.

Officials will hold a grand opening for the pediatrics and dental offices on Wednesday, according to a news release.

The release said the university has agreed to a five-year lease of 12,500 square feet in the Sam Swope Kosair Charities Centre, 982 Eastern Parkway. The lease agreement is valued at $1.2 million, the release said.

The building, which once housed the Kosair Crippled Children?s Hospital, now houses the headquarters for Kosair Charities, which supports pediatric research and care.

Dear travel industry, we desperately need more mentors for budding ...

Building a travel startup is hard (yes, really!). Building a travel business is easier, but Tnooz TLabs is about startups with ambition to scale, not about creating companies that can provide an income for a team of people, but have no wider grand ambition.

Challenges are created because the scale is global, the leaders are siloed and the supply is fragmented.

However passions run high, people love to travel, so there are sufficient qualified people out there saying ?I could fix that ? just give me some funding and six months? ? so there is a constant influx of new travel startups (replacing those who have given up and gone back to being employees).

Most of the time these startups battle against the problem rather than their competitors. The problem is large enough ? first to solve it wins.

Many of these startups are created by new entrants to the travel industry.?The industry, as it stands today, fails these new eager and often rose-tinted spectacle-wearing entrepreneurs.

They need help and they are not getting it.

I am not talking about deals (that is a serious decision that has to be taken on its own merits). Instead I am talking about how people with experience can pass on their knowledge to these new entrepreneurs.

I learned my trade by being a contract project manager for various hotel chains, airlines and leading European tour operators.

I used to be given a budget, an internal team and normally a complex project (at sketchy business requirement stage) and I would have to deliver it. I either delivered or I was out. I ended up getting quite good at it. It was survival of the fittest.

Travel entrepreneurs in their twenties don?t have that base experience. Instead, they have MBAs, they have legal or perhaps design or advertising backgrounds.

These are the entrepreneurs we should be supporting. They are the future, these are the people with the vision and commitment to make a difference.

Letting them try, fail for six months, and then wither away is not how to create new travel industry leaders.

Historically of course this problem didn?t exist. The leaders of today started out as junior staff at larger companies. These companies had leadership schemes and those with the talent had guidance through their early careers.

Tomorrows leaders don?t have that luxury as they are fragmented over multiple startups in many different geographies.

How I try to solve the problem today

Personally I have learnt a lot from people I interact with. Many are younger than me, some are older, but my process is a little too ad-hoc.

I tend to email people I respect hoping that some nugget of great insight will come my way. Often it does and all the effort is rewarded. Often I get nothing and I am considered a nuisance. Pity.

Likewise people email me for help and advice. I tend to be far too dismissive of these emails (they clog up my inbox and I have no real idea what to do). Instead I tend to think about the problem for two minutes and rattle off an email with my quick answer.

The solution

We need more mentors. Yes!

But this may not scale, sadly, and scale is important. There are hundreds of companies and entrepreneurs who need help and mentorship.

But when asked who would you like as an industry mentor, everyone is going to mention the same 10 names. Er, no, that isn?t a viable solution.

?What one thing?

As mentioned, when I am currently asked for advice, I tend to answer with a quick thought: ?in your shoes I would do ABC?. Writing a one or two liner is a much nicer way to handle the email than not replying. It doesn?t take very long either.

I used to think that this doesn?t have any value to the recipient. HOWEVER imagine that you had 10 people?s ?what one thing would you do? answer. ?Wow. Powerful. Especially if these were people you respected but could never really fully engage with directly.

Imagine a web service where you could go through the companies you care about and document the ?what one thing would you do in their shoes? ? and they can see that.

Likewise you can see, on your company, ?what one thing? other people thought you should be doing. A bit like AngelList but for ideas and suggestions, not for funding.

Make this a private, invitation only, platform.

I would personally love this ? I wouldn?t have to send email to people hoping for a useful insight in return. I could see what people think I should be doing. I would have a means to update other companies about our latest news (that they would not otherwise get via reading our newsletters etc)

The travel industry in 20 years time will be a much better place if we can keep these new travel startup entrepreneurs in the game.

Maybe my idea would help.

Pro football player comes home to KCK to host free youth camp

KANSAS CITY, Kan. ? A local football star wanted to give back to his community Saturday in Kansas City, Kansas.? Darrell Stuckey, who now plays as a safety for the San Diego Chargers, hosted a free youth football camp at Bishop Ward High School.

More than 180 campers, aged 7 to 18, worked on all kinds of football techniques including foot work and tackling.

Stuckey said he wanted to offer kids something he had always hoped for while he was growing up.

?Football is just a game, but it transfers so many life experiences into the boys minds.? It teaches them discipline and integrity ? how to work with others.? If they can do the little things right in football, then it builds the character in them to do the little things right in life,? he explained.

This was the first year for the free camp.? Stuckey told FOX 4 News he hopes the event will be an annual one.

The Many Benefits of Yoga Stretching - Natural Holistic Health Blog

The Many Benefits of Yoga Stretching

Stretching your schedule to fit your yoga time in could ultimately make you much more productive, as well as greatly improve your health and fitness level, which would add an element of relaxation to that schedule itself!

If these sound like things you?d say if someone suggested a yoga class to you, then you need to read on and find out why doing yoga is exactly the extra thing you should stretch your busy schedule to include ?

Stretching to boost that body

Despite the fact that many of us feel like we spend the day rushing about, the truth is that we are spending far too much time at our computers, desks and work stations or sitting about on uncomfortable commuter journeys, all of? which leave us susceptible to short-term body aches, pains and niggles and long-term posture damage.?

A yoga class offers the opportunity to remedy aches and pains from a tense, sedentary body which has been hunched over a desk or computer for too long ?

In the short term: those aches will diminish as the muscles relax and are stretched rather than spasm and cramp in response to tension.

In the long term: as muscles respond, relax and repair, posture will improve overall, reducing the risk of further injury from still needing to be at that computer for work.? You would also find that your core strength improves and your body firms up as a result of the sessions, all of which also strengthens your body?s resistance to prolonged posture damage. ?

Oh and that other cost of the short-term, long-term damage to our bodies, the cost to our pockets??

Yoga instructor training includes extensive modules on anatomy, so if you do have specific problem areas your yoga instructor will know which stretches will be the most beneficial; believe me, a weekly yoga class run by a fully qualified yoga instructor is actually far cheaper than a series of visits to a chiropractor!

The Many Benefits of Yoga Stretching Stretching to expand that mind

A brain that?s constantly buzzing with activity, deadlines, schedules and to-do lists will quickly become fatigued.?

Add to this any work stress and overtime and your brain can rapidly show signs of running down into a burn-out: confusion, poor memory and a general inability to think clearly are all signs of a brain that?s becoming overwhelmed and overtired by constant activity.

Yoga offers the chance to give to relax and stretch our busy brains.? It?s not about stretching out to consider the meaning of life or the universe (unless you want to) but it is about putting that work-brain on hold for a moment and just letting your brain unwind, your mind wander and maybe even find yourself in there!??

When was the last time you were able to set your mind free in this way?

Stretching to achieve balance

Within our busy lives, most of us end up doing extra work or spend time thinking about work as we busily schedule our other, domestic, life around it.?

As a result, our domestic lives often mirror our work schedules because we?re trying to organize and carry out all of those domestic have-tos amongst our paid work, leaving us in a situation of very little life / work balance ? even when we?re not actually at work.?

All of this adds up to stress and an imbalance which reduces our performance as well as our well-being in all aspects of our lives.

The Many Benefits of Yoga Stretching By contrast, time spent at a yoga class is time set aside from all demands, where both body and mind can regain some balance before the next onslaught of either domestic or work activity.

Whilst these holistic benefits can again be felt very quickly, often after just one class, it?s the long-term benefits of yoga classes, including that improved posture, time to press pause on the brain and bring back a sense of balance to your life which really makes that extra effort to do it worthwhile.?

When you consider it that way, stretching that schedule to fit your yoga time in could ultimately make you much more productive, which would add an element of relaxation to that schedule itself!? So, ready to schedule in some yoga and you time, now?
