You can find a news story about Wal-Mart nearly every day. Some are good and some are bad. It is fascinating. The alleged Mexican bribery scandal is one of the latest. Years ago Wal-Mart really botched their decisions about employee health care and the message they shared about it. But, demanding reduced packaging from their vendors has had a huge environmental impact. And I?ll never forget the post-Katrina Fortune Magazine cover: Government Broke Down. Business Stepped Up. A few weeks back, on the same day the news reported Wal-Mart going into crisis mode because of the bribery scandal, I saw a story about Wal-Mart giving $2 billion to end hunger in America. I?m sure that was orchestrated but again, really big, amazing examples of organization behavior.

I don?t think Wal-Mart is completely terrible or entirely wonderful but I do believe it is important to look at all sides of an issue or an entity. The world is too complex nowadays to see things as flat or either black/white or purely good/bad.

Hopes for US recovery, China stimulus help markets

LONDON (AP) ? Global markets rose Tuesday on signs of improvement in the U.S. housing market and on hopes China will act to support growth in its economy, the world's second-largest.

A survey by S&P/Case Shiller showed home prices rose in major U.S. cities in March for the first time in seven months. Combined with record low mortgage rates and a steady improvement in the labor market, the report suggested that the U.S. property market ? which was at the heart of the global financial crisis in 2008 ? is strengthening.

"With the economic recovery now on firmer ground, we see no reason to alter our view that U.S. house prices have now found a floor," said Ed Stansfield, chief property economist at Capital Economics.

The figures helped offset the impact of a more downbeat report showing U.S. consumer optimism fell in May to the lowest in eight months. The Conference Board said its Consumer Confidence Index fell to 64.9 points, below analyst expectations.

In Europe, Britain's FTSE 100 was up 0.4 percent to 5,376.42 while Germany's DAX rose 1.1 percent to 6,393.20. The CAC-40 in Paris rose 1.1 percent to 3,076.35. The euro was up marginally at $1.2547.

Wall Street opened higher after a three-day weekend for Memorial Day holiday, with the Dow and S&P 500 both rising 1.1 percent, to 12,584.93 and 1,331.97, respectively.

Earlier, markets had been unsettled by concerns that Spain's ailing banking sector might worsen the European debt crisis.

The country's banks are sitting on massive amounts of soured real estate investments. That has led to the recent nationalization of Bankia, the country's fourth-largest lender, which revealed last week it needed more money than expected ? ?19 billion ($23.8 billion) ? in state aid to shore itself up.

Investors fear that the Spanish government, which is already under pressure to lower its debts at a time of recession and record-high unemployment, will be overwhelmed by the cost of saving the country's banking sector.

Those concerns kept pressure on Spain's Ibex, which was down 2.1 percent, with shares in Bankia dropping another 13.6 percent.

The latest bad news to hit the country was a report showing retail sales were down 9.8 percent in April in year-on-year terms, more than double the 3.8 percent fall posted in March.

The figures underlined the brutal impact that government austerity cuts and economic uncertainty are having on households. They also bolster the case for Europe to find new ways to bolster economic growth, though leaders disagree over how to achieve that.

Years of financial and economic uncertainty ? first in the global credit crunch and now in the debt crisis ? have hammered public confidence in the future of European integration, according to a survey by Pew Research across eight European Union countries, including five that use the euro.

"This crisis of confidence is evident in the economy, in the future, in the benefits of European economic integration, in EU membership, in the euro and in the free market system," Pew said in a statement accompanying its survey.

Despite those headwinds, Pew found there was no desire for those countries that use the euro to abandon the single currency.

Europe's debt crisis will remain a dominant theme for markets for weeks to come as investors gauge the likelihood that Greece might leave the eurozone after elections on June 17. If Greeks vote for parties that support the country's bailout terms, ensuring a continued flow of rescue loans, the country will hope to stay in the eurozone.

The pro-bailout parties hold a narrow lead, according to the latest polls, but uncertainty over the ultimate outcome of the elections will keep market sentiment fragile and prone to swings in mood.

Earlier in Asia, stock indexes rose on hopes that China will relax monetary policy and announce fiscal stimulus measures to offset slowing economic growth.

"This has been a predominant theme since Premier Wen Jiabao's comments showing commitment to keep China's growth from stalling," said Stan Shamu, market strategist at IG Markets.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 0.7 percent to close at 8,657.08 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 1.4 percent to 19,055.46. South Korea's Kospi climbed 1.4 percent after being closed Monday for a public holiday while China's benchmark Shanghai Composite Index rose 1.2 percent.

Benchmark oil for July delivery was up 80 cents to $91.66 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Despite its financial issues, the firm experienced its fair share of legal success, however. It represented business tycoon Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks, against SEC allegations of insider trading. The firm also provided counsel to MetLife in its $12 billion acquisition of Travelers Life and Annuity.

A 28-year-old known only as Rachel has gained viral fame, and a nickname - Ridiculously Photogenic Girl - after posting downright adorable pics of herself after surgery.

“I’m currently in the ICU of the Cleveland Clinic,” she wrote on Reddit. “My pain is being reasonably managed, but I cannot fall asleep. Anyone care to entertain me?”

Judging by the response, the answer was yes. The post got 612 comments, many about her beauty, and became its own meme, with takeoffs on the pic such as this:

Rachel, an Army wife and mother from Dayton, Ohio, has congenital emphysema, a lung disease she’s had all her life but was recently exacerbated by pneumonia.

Nearly 60 percent of her right lung was damaged and had to be removed.

“I begged my surgeon to let me see it when he got it out,” she wrote. “He took pics, though, and I will get to see them today. Anyone want to check them out??”

No, but 612 people are clearly happy to check her out. Not that we blame them. Rachel said even she was surprised by how great she looked after major surgery.

“I am just as surprised as everyone else that I managed to look like that,” she wrote. “I was on so many pain meds ... I couldn’t feel anything but happiness!”

Even Ridiculously Photogenic Girl is human, though. When the painkillers wore off, "it was a very different picture in there," Rachel conceded.

BELLEFONTE, Pa. (AP) ? Jerry Sandusky attended a closed-door meeting with the judge in his child sexual abuse case Tuesday and four of his accusers made formal requests for anonymity, a day before what could be the final hearing before the start of trial.

The topic of the previously unannounced meeting ? which also included Sandusky's lawyer and prosecutors ? wasn't clear, and participants declined to comment afterward.

Judge John Cleland has not ruled on a pending defense request to have charges dismissed. Jury selection from a pool of State College-area residents is expected to begin June 5.

Sandusky, 68, a retired assistant football coach at Penn State, faces 52 criminal counts. Prosecutors say he sexually abused 10 boys over 15 years, allegations he has repeatedly denied.

His lawyer, Joe Amendola, has said Sandusky did not intend to be at the pretrial hearing Wednesday afternoon.

Also Tuesday, four of the accusers filed court motions asking Cleland to prevent their names from being made public.

Lawyers for so-called Victims 3, 5 and 7 made a broad request to prevent all the accusers' identities from being disclosed publicly, saying disclosure would cause their clients additional fear, anxiety and mental anguish and potentially expose them to physical harm.

Attorneys Andrew Shubin and Justine Andronici, who represent Victims 3 and 7, wrote in their motion that while their clients' testimony is "of critical importance and the legitimate subject of media and public interest, personal information identifying Sandusky's alleged sexual abuse victims is not." Lawyers for Victim 5 joined their motion.

Lawyers for Victim 4 asked that a pseudonym be used for him during the upcoming trial.

"It is an unfortunate reality that some victims in high profile cases view the disclosure of their identity as the equivalent of being branded with a scarlet letter," wrote Ben Andreozzi and Jeff Fritz, lawyers for Victim 4, adding that accusers would rather be remembered for their positive contributions to society.

"Although Victim 4 remains 100 percent committed to testifying against the defendant in this case, at what expense will it come to his short-term and long-term well-being?" they wrote.

Shubin and Andronici wrote that Sandusky's lawyer wasn't opposed to their motion, but they had not heard back from state prosecutors. Messages left after business hours on Tuesday for a spokesman for the attorney general's office, and for Sandusky's lawyers, were not immediately returned.

Mr. Baseball honor surprises and thrills Keystone?s Brandyn Sittinger

VERMILION ? Brandyn Sittinger always loved attending the Lorain County high school baseball all-star game, where he got a special kick from the announcement of Mr. Baseball.

?I?ve always watched guys walk up to get it, and it was always so cool,? said Sittinger a right-handed pitcher and shortstop for the Keystone Wildcats.

Now Sittinger?s one of them. He was named this year?s Lorain County Mr. Baseball between games Saturday at Vermilion High School.

Past winners received something Sittinger did not ? a trophy. The award?s sponsor forgot to bring it, so it will be presented at a later date.

Sittinger said he didn?t mind not having the hardware in hand.

?It doesn?t matter,? he said. ?I used to dream about winning this. It?s surreal that I got it now.?

Sittinger got it after a season in which he helped lead Keystone to its second consecutive Division III district championship.

All he did was go 8-2 with a 1.04 earned run average. In 65 innings he allowed only 32 hits and nine earned runs, while walking 16 and striking out 103. He also hit .400 with 38 hits, 38 runs scored, 12 doubles, four triples, 24 runs batted in and seven stolen bases.

Sittinger, who will attend Marshall University on a baseball scholarship in the fall, didn?t play Saturday. He has committed to play in two other all-star games, which is the maximum number for a high school senior.

Besides, Sittinger threw 141 pitches over eight innings in the Wildcats? 3-2 loss to Youngstown Ursuline in Thursday?s regional semifinal.

?I really am surprised I won,? Sittinger said. ?I figured there were a lot of good seniors. I?m honored to get it.?

Sittinger is the first Mr. Baseball winner from Keystone since Kyle Shaw won in 2008.

?I would like to thank my coaches for all they have done for me, including putting out my name,? Sittinger said. ?I would like to thank Coach (Dwayne) Callaway. He helped me with my mechanics. He has been a great mentor, and he?s a big reason I got this.?

Callaway coaches the North Coast Gladiators, Sittinger?s summer team.

?I?m proud of him,? Keystone coach Mark Clement said. ?He?s well-deserving of this award. He was our top pitcher and this year he put the hitting together with the pitching. He?s a good kid and a fine student. He?ll do well in college.?

Sittinger carries a 3.6 grade-point average. He will major in sports management in college.

?He has always been tough on himself,? Callaway said. ?Brandyn has always had high expectations for himself. That?s a reason he has been successful.?

WHITE FIELDS CELEBRATION

Who: 400 people, community and civic leaders, mentors, volunteers, supporters, and donors of White Fields were at a dinner celebration.

Brad and Valerie Naifeh, Frank Alberson.

Where: The event was on the White Fields campus under a tent. Decor was country chic with globe lighting, wagon wheel chandeliers, hay bales and centerpieces of herbs, which were repurposed in the campus gardens.

What: Guests commemorated the fifth-year anniversary. They toured the boys living quarters and new educational facility. Music was by Banana Seat and special presentations were given to Bobby Young, a White Fields mentor, and board members Robert Braver and Ken Davidson for their support of White Fields. Co-founders Tom Ward and Trent Ward were also on the program, and one of the boys gave a speech about his life.

Why: The celebration was an event to thank supporters, volunteers and donors.

How: Mission of White Fields is to provide a ?continuum model of care offering a long-term home for abused and neglected boys.? These boys are in permanent custody of the Oklahoma Department of Human Services Child Welfare Division.

SYMPHONY SHOW HOUSE EVENING

Party: Jose Freede and daughters, Cathy Freede and Margaret Owens, entertained at the final dinner for the 2012 Symphony Show House. About 150 guests toured the house and then enjoyed dinner in the air-conditioned tent set up outside. Freede, a Show House supporter for the last 39 years, thanked the guests for attending, including Debby and Paul Dudman for providing drinks for the event.

Elegant entertaining: Beautiful bouquets of pink and coral-colored roses, anemones and tulips decorated the tables and a huge bouquet of flowers was on the buffet table. Dinner was beef tenderloin, salmon, chicken, fresh garden peas and asparagus, and a variety of desserts including chocolate mousse.

Rio de Janeiro (AP) ? Just how many variations can you spin off the marvel of simplicity that is the bikini?

Judging by the options on spectacular display at FashionRio, the Marvelous City's five-day-long summer 2013 fashion extravaganza, the options are endless.

Fancy pairing your string bikini top with spandex pants hung with rows of seductively dangling fringe, which provide so much more coverage than the country's traditional "fio dental" or "dental floss" bottoms? Rio's got just the thing for you.

Toying with the idea of kitting out your two-piece with a chain mail sheath emblazoned with a palm tree? Look no further.

Bikinis are Brazilian designers' bread and butter, so while their winter collections tend to fall flat, with half-hearted attempts at outerwear, summer reliably sizzles. And the southern hemisphere summer collections that will hit the beach this coming January were no exception.

Sao Paulo-based label Triya served up the season's most eye-popping options, a psychedelic rainbow that broke the beachwear mold. Beyond the fringed pant bikini, the brand's brainchild, were tiny bottoms paired with long sleeve spandex tops cropped short to show off the models' abs and a zebra-printed bandeau top that sprouted an ankle length skirt in aubergine silk with a bold slit up one side.

Swimsuits more in name than in function, many of Triya's offerings looked like what you might wear to an ultra-chic beachside rave thrown by a billionaire. Putting aside the inevitable inconveniences of wearing a flowing silk ball gown to the beach, the only drawback to the wildly creative offerings were the bizarre tan lines they'd be sure to leave.

Cia. Maritima brought out the big guns - Victoria's Secret angel Izabel Goulart among other Brazilian-born supermodels - to show off its teeny-weeny bikinis. Goulart rocked the catwalk in a leopard print string bikini fitted with a sexy spider's web of thin yellow straps. Aline Weber, a regular on top runways in New York and Paris, worked a one-piece with cute cap sleeves and bold cutouts at the midriff. The pineapple prints gave a mouthwateringly tropical touch to the toothsome collection.

Va-va-voom one-pieces emerged as major winners here, with just about everyone who is anyone in Brazilian swimwear sending out variations on the vampish maillot. Top high-street beachwear label Blue Man sent out white swimsuits decidedly not made for anyone's grandma, with how-low-can-you-go V necks. And a strapless one-piece had hiplines that started at just under the bust, the whole seemingly precarious contraption held, one can only hope, in place by a low-slung belt.

Lenny, Brazil's reigning queen of patrician swimwear, served up racerback tanks that looked like they'd been tagged by a Rio graffiti artist and bikinis whose fuller coverage was undermined by a cat claw of strategically placed slashes. Paired with the bikini tops, the short, flippy skirts would make for the perfect transition from the sands of Ipanema to cocktail hour at the beachfront Hotel Fasano, among Rio's chicest and most expensive.

A raucous, theatrical show by streetwear label Reserva wrapped up FashionRio in style late Saturday.

Models of all ages, from toddlers to septuagenarians, and several ethnicities frolicked, skipped and breakdanced on a catwalk strewn, like a sprawling bourgeois home, with couches and armchairs and an oversized dining room table. The soundtrack pumped as the models sat down for a family lunch and then boogied over the photographers' pit to pull off their best dance moves in front of the snapping flashbulbs.

With its preppy multi-ethnic family vibe, the show had a sort of Abercrombie & Fitch thing going, but at the same time felt more authentically Brazilian than many of the week's other shows, most of which featured just a sprinkling of nonwhite models.

Marc Faber Guarantees A Global Recession - Business Insider

In an interview on CNBC's Fast Money Halftime Report, Marc Faber of the "Gloom, Boom, and Doom Report" stated that a global recession in the final quarter of this year or any time next year is certain.

?I think we could have a global recession either in Q4 or early 2013. That?s a distinct possibility."

When asked what were the odds, Faber replied, "100%."

Faber has been calling a potential stock market crash later this year if the markets did not come down, but since the markets have dropped lately he does not expect the 1987-style crash he previously mentioned. Despite his doubt of a market crash, Faber is guaranteeing a recession within the next year and a half, which is a pretty astonishing call.

The nation's oil and gas wells produce at least nine billion liters of contaminated water per day, according to an Argonne National Laboratory report. And that is an underestimate of the amount of brine, fracking fluid and other contaminated water that flows back up a well along with the natural gas or oil, because it is based on incomplete data from state governments gathered in 2007.

The volume will only get larger, too: oil and gas producers use at least 7.5 million liters of water per well to fracture subterranean formations and release entrapped hydrocarbon fuels, a practice that has grown in the U.S. by at least 48 percent per year in the last five years, according to the Energy Information Administration. The rise is quickest in places such as the oil-bearing Bakken Formation in North Dakota or the natural gas-rich Marcellus Shale underlying parts of New York State, Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia.

The problem is that the large volumes of water that flow back to the surface along with the oil or gas are laced with everything from naturally radioactive minerals to proprietary chemicals. And there are not a lot of cost-effective options for treating it, other than dumping it down a deep well. But as certain states that are experiencing drought begin to restrict industrial water usage, fossil-fuel companies are experimenting with traditional and untraditional water treatment chemistries and technologies to try to clean this dirty water?or limit its use in the first place.

Recycling is not enough
The first option is to reuse wastewater in whatever ways possible. For fracking, "to the extent possible, fracturing fluid is recovered and recycled for reuse in future fracturing operations," says Reid Porter, a spokesman for the American Petroleum Institute, an industry group. "Recycling of flow-back water reduces demand for freshwater and reduces the need for disposal of wastewater."

But that water still has to be cleaned before it is reused, otherwise it loses the ability to do its subterranean dirty work. Simply dumping it improperly is not an option, because the high levels of salts and minerals will poison a river, stream or aquifer or it will render land incapable of supporting life for generations, like the salt pans of Utah or the ancient farm fields of Carthage salted by the Roman army. The cleansing technologies employed range from high-tech membranes that selectively filter out specific contaminants to the crude solution of boiling away the water, leaving scales of salts and other minerals behind on the walls of the boiler.

"Most of what we get out of the water are salts and a low-level of organics" (hydrocarbons and other contaminating carbon-based molecules), explains environmental engineer Steve Hopper, executive vice president of the industrial business group at Veolia Water, which is helping oil and gas companies cope with such "produced" water. "We have an example in California where we treated the water until it was so pure we had to add minerals back into it to be able to discharge it." The problem, thus far, has been cost, although Hopper argues Veolia's technologies add only "5 percent" to the cost of a given well.

A diversity of waters
To add to the challenge of sheer volume, the water produced by each oil and gas well is often different?with varying levels of acidity, saltiness or types of contaminants, whether dissolved hydrocarbons or heavy metals leached from the surrounding rock.
