Virtualization

This is relative new technique that is often used on servers. Before starting any operating system installation you have to make sure that all the hardware is certified to work with the new operating system. Also confirm that the hardware resources meet the minimum installation requirements. Moreover, when you perform an upgrade it is a very good practice to perform a virus scan before starting the installation and a complete full backup of all your personal data.

One method that helps you protect your data is this: Create multiple partitions on the hard disk and install a different OS on each partition. Then copy all your data inside an empty partition that does not contain an OS. This way you can upgrade the operating system without the risk of losing any data. Backup and recovery of data files is also easier with this design.

It is also important to decide the type of file system to use. The file system controls how the OS stores and tracks the files. There are several different file systems available. The most well-known are: FAT 32, NTFS, HPFS, ext2 and ext3. Every operating system is designed to use one or more of these file systems. There are advantages and disadvantages on every file system. Careful consideration should be made to the type of file systems supported by the selected OS and the benefits of each.

You can find several programs to modify the partitioning structure and file system of a hard drive after installation, but it is better to avoid them if possible. Freedom Investing 2012 (Free Money Finance)

I've been discussing foreign freedom investing for a decade now. In the spring of 2010, I used the term "Ring-of-Fire" to describe countries with a high debt and deficit and suggested avoiding them. A year later, I revisited that advice and counseled investors to continue tilting toward specific countries. Now at year end, I will review how freedom investing fared in 2011 and in the decade since 2002.

The Heritage Foundation has released its 2012 Index of Economic Freedom. Since 1994, the Heritage Foundation Index of Economic Freedom has used a systematic empirical measurement of economic freedom to evaluate countries worldwide. The index clearly shows that economic freedom and higher rates of long-term economic growth go together. Investors can use the study to select countries for their foreign stock allocation.

The foundation defines economic freedom as "the absence of government coercion or constraint on the production, distribution, or consumption of goods and services beyond the extent necessary for citizens to protect and maintain liberty itself. In other words, people are free to work, produce, consume, and invest in the ways they feel are most productive."

This year's changes were discouraging. Paul A. Gigot, the Wall Street Journal editorial page editor, wrote in the foreword to this year's report, "The financial panic and Great Recession have sent the march of freedom in reverse, and the policy responses to both events have done little to arrest the retreat." If all that Keynesian spending really did any good, you would expect countries that increased government spending to have better returns as a result. But they did not.

I took 14 of the developed countries with the largest investable markets and compared their current economic freedom score with their returns over the past 1, 3, 5 and 10 years. Only five of these countries are ranked in the free category: Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand and Switzerland. Canada moved from free to mostly free this year. Two years ago the United States fell out as well.

The nations in my analysis included 16 different developed countries representing 85% of the world's investable markets and 98% of the developed countries. Freedom scores ranged from #1 in freedom Hong Kong at 89.9 to #92 ranked mostly unfree Italy at 58.8.

The spread of freedom scores among these countries was more than 30 points. And the trend line for the last year showed an average extra return of 0.36% per freedom point. The 3-year, 5-year and 10-year trend lines between freedom and investment return were similar or better. Over the past decade, countries with freedom have experienced annual investments returns 6% above the EAFE index and 10% above countries like Italy.

This correlation is not accidental. As Italy's government spending has increased, so has its corruption. Big government is not the answer to corruption. It is largely the cause. And excessive government spending does not encourage the private sector. It competes with the private sector.

A country's economic freedom score is based on 50 measurements. They fall under these 10 categories: property rights, freedom from corruption, fiscal freedom, government spending, business freedom, labor freedom, monetary freedom, trade freedom, investment freedom and financial freedom.

The sovereign debt problems of the United States and the European Union affect several of these freedom scores. Nevertheless, we think it is important to look at a country?s debt and deficit as well. Some countries actually follow Keynesian advice and have built up a reserve fund specifically for the lean years of recession. Others simply use his ideas as an excuse to spend even more in the lean year than their normal irresponsibility.

We believe this is one of the times when your asset allocation should tilt foreign and overweight the handful of countries with high economic freedom. Although many economists acknowledge that freedom matters, few investment strategies take advantage of this fact.

Sophie's World: Mardi Gras Shoes

If I haven?t extolled the artistic talent and sheer brilliance of my sister Freda, and how incredibly blessed I am to have her working with me day in and day out, please let me do so now. At the risk of sounding over-the-top, she is simply the most creative individual I know. Case in point: Mardi Gras.

If you?ve ever been to Mardi Gras in New Orleans, you know there is no other energy like it in the world (except possible Carnival, but I?ve never been to Brazil, so I can?t really speak to that). Mardi Gras is an explosion of color, sound, culture, food, and drink. It?s an amazing week-long party with parades, outrageous costumes, and my personal favorite: specialty giveaways. Most people know about the beads that are tossed from floats and balconies all over town, but did you know people also give away doubloons, coconuts, and shoes? Yes, shoes! I?m not talking little plastic Barbie shoes, I?m talking the most amazing, hand-embellished shoes you ever did see. Each shoe is a work of art!

We are lucky enough to be involved with the process of making these shoes for a beloved client, and thought we would pass on the tradition for your next Mardi Gras event.

Personally, I think these shoes go way beyond the status of ?craft,? and into the realm of high art, but they would make a great activity at any glitzy, glamour-filled event. Basically all you need are some fun shoes (high heels are always great, but boots, wedges, sandals, even flip flops or baby shoes can work). The main ingredients for making Mardi Gras shoes are glitter, glue, and fun.

The shoes can be found in any discount shoe place (such as Payless), but for variety, I like to hit the thrift stores. The great thing about thrift stores such as Goodwill and the Salvation Army is that you?ll get an unbelievable variety of shoes to choose from, and all the money goes to a good cause. I always think it?s much more fun to have tons of different shoes, as opposed to one repeated style. You know what they say: ?variety is the spice of life...? or in this case, the ?variety is the glitter base for these amazing shoes!?

I must warn you that this is a messy craft, and your workspace may just end up looking like Tinkerbell and her friends went to war. But if you cover your floors and workspace with plastic or tarps, it shouldn?t be too bad. Still, it may truly test the suction power of your Dyson vacuum cleaner! I also have to warn you that glitter is contagious. My sister calls it the herpes of all craft supplies. You will unintentionally pass it on to your friends and family. Like the norovirus that is shutting down schools here in San Francisco, it?s merciless. You?ll find it in your bedsheets, your laundry, your pores... Yes, gross but true -- my sister has actually had glitter-filled zits! I won?t go there...

Anyway, if I haven?t frightened you off, you are going to have the time of your life!

The steps to making a Mardi Gras shoe are really easy, and the supplies are so varied that once you?ve got your base, anything from paperclips to bottlecaps can make a cool decorating element.

Here?s what you?ll need to make your shoes:

1. Assorted shoes (any size, variety, or style)

2. Modge Podge (my sister has tried every type of glue out there, and this is the best)

3. Sponge-tipped paintbrushes (cheap ones are fine, just make sure you have plenty as they do tend to disintegrate with usage)

4. Standard glitter (you?ll need a good sized jar, 4 oz. at least) Don?t get the expensive, ultra-fine glitter, you want the regular type. (As many colors as you can find!)

5. Hot glue gun and glue sticks (stock up on the sticks!)

6. Cardboard box (like a shirt /gift box, with a smooth bottom and no folded flaps) -- 1 per glitter color

7. An assortment of embellishments: trims, laces, puffballs, old toys, bows, old Christmas ornaments, things you find under the seat cushions of your couch, etc.

8. Scissors

9. Plastic tarps to cover your working area

How-to:

You will want to make these shoes over the course of 2 or 3 days. The first day or two will be the preparation days, meaning, getting the shoe base ready for embellishment. The following day will be spent in a glue-gunning frenzy.

Day 1: Prep your area/prep the shoes

Make sure to cover your work area with plastic, tarps, etc. Trust me on this one.

1. Take your shoes and give them a gentle cleaning so they are dust and dirt free.

2. Using your sponge brush, liberally apply Modge Podge to one area of the shoe at a time (you may want to start with the insole, or possibly the toe portion of the shoe).

3. Hold your Modge Podged shoe over your shirt box and liberally shake on one color of glitter. You will only want to work with one color at a time, letting that color dry before adding another color. In this way, you can actually make patterns with your glitter.

4. Make sure that your glitter adheres to all of the Modge Podge. Don?t leave any white spots. If need be, place your shoe on a piece of newspaper, and pour the glitter contents of the shirt box back into the glitter container. Repeat step 3 until the shoe is completely covered.

5. Set your shoe aside to dry.

6. When the shoe is dry, repeat step numbers 2 & 3 on different areas of the shoe. Keep repeating these steps until the entire shoe is covered in glitter. This is your base shoe.

7. Let your base completely dry (may take 24 hours).

Day Two: Decorating the shoes

8. Now, go to town! Using your glue gun, add whatever kind of crazy embellishments that you can gather. Don?t be shy; the crazier and wackier the shoe, the better it is!

9. That?s it! Now display your shoes for the world to see.

As I mentioned above, I think this would be an amazing craft for a party, event, or fundraiser. The host would need to prep the shoes ahead of time, but once the base is done, then the real fun can begin. Invite your friends over for an evening that is bound to create memories. Just like a quilting bee, this is the kind of craft that engages lots of people at the same time and invokes that wonderful feeling of sharing. I can almost guarantee that if you get a group of friends together around the table decorating these shoes, the stories will fly (just like those glitter-bombing fairies)!

If you want inspiration just check out some of the amazing creations my sister Freda made for our client. VIENNA (Reuters) ? Afghanistan cannot be stable while its economy depends so heavily on the drugs trade, and its allies must step up the fight to combat the industry, U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said on Thursday.

Opening a major international conference on ways to combat narcotics production in Afghanistan and smuggling through neighboring states, Ban said the problem undermined efforts to help Afghanistan emerge as a normally functioning economy.

"We cannot speak of sustainable development when opium production is the only viable economic activity in the country," he told delegates of the so-called Paris Pact Ministerial Conference, which first met in 2003.

"We cannot expect stability when 15 percent of Afghanistan's gross domestic product comes from the drugs trade."

The Vienna conference, with participants from more than 50 countries and international organizations including the foreign ministers of Russia and France, was due to adopt a new declaration at the end of a one-day session.

With foreign combat forces, and much of their cash and air power, expected to be gone from the country by the end of 2014, the Afghan government will need more help fighting poppy cultivation, which rose over the last year, experts say.

"Despite continued efforts by the international community and major achievements, the problem of illicit traffic in opiates continues to be of serious concern," the draft Vienna Declaration said.

"Illicit traffic in opiates, including heroin, is a growing problem, generating illicit financial flows, fuelling corruption and organized crime and in some cases funding terrorist activities and insurgency."

The poppy economy in Afghanistan, which provides an income for insurgents in the country blighted by decades of war, has grown significantly in 2011 with soaring prices and expanded cultivation, a U.N. report said late last year.

Land under poppy cultivation climbed 7 percent from 2010 as farmers sought to capitalize on a sharp rise in opium prices caused by an unidentified disease, the report by the U.N. drugs agency and Afghanistan's counter-narcotics ministry said.

Three provinces in the north and east of the country that had been declared "poppy-free" have returned to production, it said. Opium is a thick paste from poppy that is processed into heroin.

Ban said export earnings from Afghan opiates may be worth as much as $2.4 billion.

"Above all, the Afghan government must prioritize the issue of narcotics," he said, according to a copy of his speech.

An initiative in Helmand province - a carrot-and-stick approach to stopping poppy growing which involved giving out food seeds and fertilizer - was a good example of government efforts, but more can be done.

"Law enforcement agencies must work harder on eradicating crops, eliminating laboratories, keeping precursors from entering the country and inhibiting drug trafficking."

The quest is more urgent for his top two challengers ? Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich ? as they battle to emerge as the top alternative to Romney. Both have spent the entire campaign operating on shoestring budgets and working to capitalize on momentum from past victories. Now, with more than one state voting on a given day, they must figure out how to pay for get-out-the-vote efforts and TV ads in multiple states at once, far from an easy feat.

"It's all about money," Gingrich spokesman R.C. Hammond said, describing the former House speaker's upcoming week.

A look at the upcoming primary calendar shows why.

There are 10 states with contests on March 6 ? Super Tuesday. A full week's worth of ads running at a heavy level in every one of those states would cost about $5 million by industry estimates. And the stakes are higher than ever: There are 419 delegates to the Republican National Convention that will be selected that day, more than all those available in previous contests combined.

All the candidates, to be sure, are hoping that outside support from allied political action committees will materialize in upcoming states as it has before.

The deep-pocked Restore Our Future super PAC, run by former Romney aides and funded in part by associates from the candidate's former private equity company, has signaled that it plans to continue bankrolling TV ads attacking both Santorum and Gingrich. Republicans say a fresh round of ads by this group is imminent.

But there's no guarantee that the Red, White and Blue Fund ? its chief donor is Foster Friess ? will go on the air to help Santorum or that Winning Our Future ? it's largely bankrolled by casino titan Sheldon Adelson's family ? will rush in again to assist Gingrich.

So that mean both candidates have little choice but to try to fill their own campaign coffers.

Santorum, who cuts costs by sleeping at the homes of supporters in each state, says he raised $3 million in three days in the wake of his victories in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri, largely online and probably from conservative grass-roots activists who are suddenly more optimistic about his chances of winning the nomination. He doesn't have the kind of big-donor network that Romney has built in the five years he's been running for president.

Thus, fundraising is a top priority as Santorum figures out how to compete with Romney in Michigan and Ohio, which are big, expensive states. That helps explain why Santorum has fewer campaign events each day this week than past weeks. Highly dependent on news coverage to capitalize on his momentum, Santorum planned public events in Washington state Monday as well as multiple appearances in Idaho, North Dakota and Michigan.

He'll need the money if he has any hope of following through with plans to go after Romney in Rust Belt states where advisers argue that Santorum's blue-collar background could help him.

Of all the candidates, Gingrich is the one planning to be most out of view this week.

He's in California through Thursday, almost exclusively focused on fundraising. He's holding three private fundraisers in Los Angeles, money events in San Diego and Fresno on Tuesday and in the San Francisco Bay area on Wednesday. He has just a handful of public events, including in Arizona and his former home state of Georgia.

Romney was campaigning in Arizona late Monday, stopping there between fundraisers in California and New York. He plans to head to Michigan for two days later this week to fend off a sudden challenge from Santorum ? but is slated to stop in Idaho after that to raise money.

He's focused on defending himself in the next states to vote, with Gingrich challenging him in Arizona and Santorum in Michigan.

Anticipating a long fight from the start of this campaign, Romney spent nearly all of last year focusing on fundraising in hopes of stockpiling enough cash.

By year's end, Romney had raised far more than his rivals, roughly $56 million.

He had $19 million on hand as 2012 and the state-by-state voting began.

But he's spent the most, too.

So far, his campaign has spent about $11 million on TV ads. He's bolstered by Restore Our Future, which spent more than $14 million.

Still unclear is whether Romney will draw on his considerable personal fortune. He spent $45 million of his own money in 2008 but hasn't signaled he'll do the same this year.

By contrast, Gingrich raised $12.6 million while Santorum netted $2.2 million last year. And, on TV, Gingrich his allies have spent about $7 million while Santorum and his backers have spent about $2.5 million.
